North of Shaftsbury, South of Oxford
Everyone who is anyone has at some point walked through Soho’s hallowed streets. Prince or pauper, cardinal or sinner, protestor or politician. Every alley, every pub, every building has its story to tell.
Oxford Street to the North, Shaftesbury Avenue to the South, Charing Cross Road to the East and Regent Street to the West – this small corner of London is where Londoner’s themselves felt their city’s pulse.
Soho is London’s dichotomy. Churches next to porn studios, million pound apartments next to refugee centres, boutique hotels next to knocking shops, private members clubs next to 24 hour come down cafes. It was and remains the original melting pot.
It might read as a Blue Plaque now, or as a footnote in a sanitised guidebook but the people that brought Soho its infamy were still there. Not the same ones, they have long since passed into notoriety but they were of that ilk. Attracted to Soho like a pilgrim to Lourdes.
The streets may not be paved with gold but that does not seem to matter, people still flock. Those hoping to make it big, make it rich, make it out or just make it with someone – they all still come hoping Soho will work its magic on them too.
